ice President Kamala Harris, serving as President of the Senate, presided over the Electoral College vote certification session, officially affirming Donald Trump’s victory and her own defeat.
"The votes for President of the United States are as follows: Donald Trump of the state of Florida has received 312 electoral votes," Vice President Harris announced during the January 6 session at the Capitol, amid thunderous applause from Republican lawmakers.
"Kamala Harris of the state of California has received 226 votes," she continued with a smile. Democratic lawmakers stood and applauded her.
Harris then struck the gavel, certifying the results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, and thanked attendees for their participation. The session lasted approximately 35 minutes.
The U.S. Constitution requires the Vice President, in their capacity as President of the Senate, to oversee the congressional session that certifies the Electoral College votes and confirms the incoming president. This duty held particular significance for Harris as she had to certify the victory of her Republican opponent while acknowledging her own loss. During the session, she was seen amicably conversing with House Speaker Mike Johnson.
After completing the task, Vice President Harris told reporters that by fulfilling her constitutional duty, she upheld the principle she had followed throughout her career: respecting her oath of office.
"I believe American democracy is only strong when we are willing to fight for and respect it. Without this commitment, democracy becomes fragile and cannot withstand moments of crisis. Today, American democracy has stood firm," Harris declared.
This year’s Electoral College certification session proceeded smoothly, in stark contrast to events four years ago. On January 6, 2021, as then-Vice President Mike Pence presided over the session to certify Joe Biden’s victory, a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in a violent insurrection, disrupting the proceedings. The attack resulted in at least five deaths, injuries to 140 police officers, and $1.5 million in damages.
Harris is not the first Vice President to preside over the certification of their own defeat. Richard Nixon and Al Gore did so in 1960 and 2000, respectively.
