Woman Burned to Death on New York Subway

A Guatemalan immigrant has been arrested after setting a woman on fire on a New York City subway train, police said.

Around 7:30 a.m. on December 22, the suspect approached a seemingly asleep woman, sitting motionless on an F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn, and ignited her clothing with a lighter.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) stated that the suspect and victim did not know each other and had no prior interactions or conflicts. Patrol officers in the station responded after detecting the smell of burning.

"What they found was a woman inside the train car engulfed in flames. Her clothing was completely incinerated in mere seconds," said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Officers used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Security footage from inside the train car revealed that the suspect set fire to the blanket the victim was wrapped in, causing the flames to spread rapidly. The victim, fully engulfed, attempted to stand before succumbing to the fire. Authorities have not yet identified the victim.

Initially unaware that the suspect remained at the scene, police later discovered him sitting on a bench at the platform outside the train car. Body camera footage from responding officers captured clear images of the suspect.

The man was arrested on a separate train in Midtown Manhattan approximately eight hours later. Officials reported that the 33-year-old suspect arrived in the U.S. from Guatemala in 2018 but have not released his name. His motive and immigration status remain under investigation.

New York City's subway system serves around 4 million riders daily. As of November, police had recorded nine homicides on the subway system this year, compared to five during the same period in 2023.
