Zelensky: Ukraine Willing to Pay for U.S. Weapons

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says Kyiv is ready to pay for American weapons that were previously provided as free military aid.

“We are not asking the U.S. for another free aid package—we see this as part of a long-term security guarantee,” Zelensky said on April 9, referring to Ukraine’s proposal to purchase a large military assistance package from the United States.

According to the Ukrainian president, the package would include at least 10 air defense systems and other essential equipment. He emphasized that the deal is critical to Ukraine’s long-term security, especially after the war ends.

“This ensures that we’ll still be protected by air defense systems after the conflict is over,” Zelensky said. He added that Ukraine is actively seeking financial resources to fund the deal. “We’re ready to find $30 billion, even $50 billion if needed,” he said, without detailing how the funds would be secured.

The Trump administration has not yet announced any new military aid packages for Ukraine, although the U.S. continues to send weapons and supplies under commitments made during President Joe Biden’s tenure.

President Trump has reportedly increased pressure on Ukraine to finalize a mineral resource agreement with the U.S., framing it as compensation for Washington’s wartime support and a precondition for future assistance.

The deal was originally planned to be signed during Zelensky’s visit to the White House on February 28, but talks collapsed after a public dispute between the two leaders in the Oval Office. Ukrainian Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko said a delegation will travel to Washington this week to restart negotiations on a new draft agreement.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian military chief Gen. Oleksandr Syrsky confirmed on April 9 that U.S. military assistance has slowed, and that European nations are now the primary contributors of defense aid to Ukraine.

Since the war began in February 2022, the U.S. has remained Ukraine’s largest overall donor. According to Germany’s Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the U.S. has provided $119.8 billion in total support—$67.1 billion in military aid, $49 billion in financial assistance, and $3.6 billion in humanitarian aid.
